SUMMARY:It’s All About the Story\, Volume IX: Jaki Shelton Green
DESCRIPTION:In 2013 the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts began an annual show highlighting the work of a local writer by responding visually to his or her work. In the past\, this show has been inspired by the work of writers with local ties: Michael Malone\, Lee Smith\, Allan Gurganus\, Jill McCorkle\, Nancy Peacock\, John Bemis\, Elizabeth Keckly and composer Billy Strayhorn. This year the show returns\, after a two year COVID hiatus\, with a show spotlighting the work of North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green. The gallery’s 21 artists have each chosen a poem from Ms. Green’s book Breath of the Song as inspiration for a work of art in their chosen medium.\nPhotographer Eric Saunders was struck by her poem “Rumors” the opening lines of which read: “what could the clouds be whispering about me? They don’t even know my name – and later in the poem – girl\, cloud know your name moon too stars told ‘em”. Two of Eric’s photographs were inspired by this poem.\nIn the poem “i know the grandmother one had hands”\, the poet speaks about her grandmother’s life\, using hands to symbolize the whole person. The poem ends with those hands poking holes in the clouds so the rain could fall. Chris Graebner took the image one step further and imagined the grandmother’s hands catching that rain\, in her painting “I Know the Grandmother One Had Hands to Catch the Rain.”\nArtist Nancy Smith’s painting “i know the grandmother one had hands” was inspired by the same poem. “On reading it\, I was flooded with memories of my grandmother. Her hands embraced the hard life as a farmer’s wife- tilling the soil\, milking cows\, rendering pork and burying two of her seven children. Long deceased\, she continues to hold me gently within her hands as I wrap myself in the quilt she stitched from clothes I wore as a child.”\nSculptor Lynn Wartski took imagery in the poem “eva” to create a piece called “Rabbit Games and Midnight Rainbows” from the lines “tongues spoken from the ears are seen at night and only precede midnight rainbows we played the games of rabbits”.\nThe poem “praise song” resonated with Jude Lobe\, speaking to her about connecting with nature and respecting what it has to teach us. “My artwork is a young girl dancing with a tree and within that tree the girl sees a soul.”\nFor Catharine Carter the poetry in Breath of the Song is\, like her own work\, all about relationships and family. “I think of my images as visual poetry and similar to the poetry of Jacki Shelton Green. Like her\, I am interested in human relationships and interactions.”\nEduardo Lapetina took the title of a collection of poems “Singing a Tree into Dance” as inspiration for an abstract painting. “I think that I was able to translate this idea from Jaki Green into a happy painting and that my image will provoke everyone to dance!”\nThe images in this volume of poetry provided fertile inspiration for the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts’ 21 visual artists. Their work will be on display from February 14th through March 26th with a reception in the gallery on February 24th from 6-9pm. In addition\, the gallery will host a reading by Ms. Green in the gallery on Sunday\, March 12th from 4-6pm. Both events are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts\nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by 21 local artists and represents these established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. The Gallery’s offerings include paintings\, sculpture\, ceramics\, photography\, textiles\, jewelry\, glass\, metals\, encaustic\, enamel\, and wood. 121 N. Churton Street\, Hillsborough\, NC 27278. SUMMARY:MELTING
DESCRIPTION:Melting into the New Year\nThe twenty one artists of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts\, will begin 2023 with a group show entitled MELTING\, a title that suggests many different things to the individual artists.\nFor the gallery’s newest member\, Catharine Carter\, it evoked images of flooded homes and rising water which are frequently in the news and weather forecasts these days. Says Catharine “I worry about the future of our planet and the kind of world we are leaving to future generations.”\nFor painter Jude Lobe “Melting” also evoked ideas of climate change. “As an environmentalist\, I immediately envisioned a lone Polar Bear standing on a small broken piece of ice with the sun setting in the background. Of course\, that image has been burned in our mind as climate change is a hot topic these days.”\nFigurative sculptor\, Lynn Wartski\, was also thinking about arctic climates with her piece “So Many Questions” which features a male emperor penguin with his penguin chick. “I anthropomorphize the chick in this sculpture to be about the stage of a human 2 or 3 year old\, when questions starting with ‘why?’ are frequently asked. I picture this young chick asking why it is taking mommy so long to walk back to the ice from the shore.”\nAbstract painter Marcy Lansman wasn’t thinking about “melting” when she created her painting. “I was playing with paint\, hoping to create a pleasing composition. Now when I look at what I created\, I see melting arctic islands\, and I can give the painting an environmental interpretation\, something related to climate change.”\nPainters Nancy Smith and Chris Graebner weren’t thinking about climate change either with their pieces for the show. Nancy’s painting “Melting into Spring” refers to that time of year when winter begins to give way to spring. I tried to capture the winter chill\, bare trees\, and the contrasting soft beginnings of new leaves sprouting. Botanical artist Chris Graebner’s painting “Winter Kale” shows snow melting on a head of bright pink ornamental kale.\nPringle Teetor\, a glass blower\, describes her piece this way “I made a lovely vase and purposely overheated the top. I allowed it to sag inward\, using heat and gravity\, as if the sun was beating down\, so hot\, that nothing could survive in our world. Not even glass.”\nOne word\, Melting\, can evoke so many different responses in creative people. Come see the show at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts from January 10th through February 12th with a reception in the gallery on Friday\, January 27th from 6-9pm.\nAbout the Gallery\nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by 21 local artists and represents these established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. The Gallery’s offerings include oil and acrylic paintings\, sculpture\, ceramics\, photography\, jewelry\, glass\, metals\, encaustic\, enamel\, and wood. 121 N. Churton Street\, Hillsborough\, NC 27278. Phone: (919) 732-5001. The gallery’s winter hours are 10am-6pm Tuesday –Saturday\, 12-4pm on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sweet Impossible Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents Sweet Impossible Blossoms\, a show of new work by jeweler Arianna Bara\, painter Chris Graebner and woodworker Ian Herdell. Just in time for spring. \nThe title of the show comes from Arianna Bara’s favorite poem “From Blossoms” by Li-Young Lee. The final stanza is There are days we live/as if death were nowhere in the background; from joy/to joy to joy\, from wing to wing\, from blossom to blossom to/impossible blossom\, to sweet impossible/blossom. Says Bara “It reminds me that days of sweetness can exist even in the midst of loss and that the creative process can renew and spark even under difficult circumstances. I have used an ancient Korean gilding technique called Keum Boo to incorporate 24 kt gold into many of my new pieces. The gold is a brilliance arising from the blackness of the darkened silver. A sweet impossible blossom.” \nChris Graebner wasn’t familiar with the poem\, but her new paintings are bouquets of flowers\, so the title felt appropriate. “Now having read it\, From Blossoms feels even more appropriate. The poem is about moments of joy and beauty and of living life in those moments with gratitude. Painting flowers is an exercise in taking something brief and mysterious and making it familiar and lasting. I find that the process of painting flowers makes them part of me. Perhaps it is some sort of Zen – paying close attention to each individual flower and petal – because it results in ‘knowing’ a plant in a way that makes it a permanent part of my world. I hope that spending time with my Sweet Impossible Blossoms will do that for the viewer as well.” \nIan Herdell is inspired by the beauty and structure of forms found in nature and brings that into his furniture designs. “I find that each tree has a story to tell\, a snapshot into its unique life. My designs incorporate and harness the knots\, splits\, rot\, spalting\, special grain and sculpting done by insects\, wind and weather. At times I also highlight these ‘imperfections’ with inlaid shells to bring more attention to them.” Among his influences are the simplicity and beautiful craftsmanship of Asian woodwork and the diagrams and sketches by naturalists of past centuries. \nSweet Impossible Blossoms will be in the gallery from March 22nd through April 24th with an opening reception in the gallery on March 25th from 6-9pm. \nAbout the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts:\nOwned and operated by 21 local artists\, HGA represents these established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. The Gallery’s offerings include paintings\, sculpture\, ceramics\, photography\, textiles\, jewelry\, glass\, metals\, encaustic\, enamel\, and wood. 121 N. Churton Street\, Hillsborough\, NC 27278. Phone: (919) 732-5001. The gallery is open 10am-6pm Tuesday – Saturday\, 12-4 on Sunday. More information can be found on the HGA website: HillsboroughGallery.com \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by a grant from the Orange County Arts Commission (funding from the North Carolina Arts Council\, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.)
