SUMMARY:Upcoming film: "The Conformist"
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist (1970) at 2pm Sunday\, 01/25/2026\, at the Passmore Center\, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. There are English subtitles. \nThe Guardian ranked the film #13 on its list of the 25 best art house films\, and described it this way:\n“A repressed upper-class intellectual is hired by Mussolini’s fascist goons to go to Paris and kill a leading dissident who was once his philosophy tutor. Such is the premise for one of the most poetic and influential films ever made. Coppola\, Scorsese and Spielberg all cite this adaptation of Alberto Moravia’s novel as a profound influence on their films. Coppola even lured Bertolucci’s director of photography\, Vittorio Storaro\, to the Philippines to bring his talents to bear on Apocalypse Now. … The Conformist is a compendium of virtuosic flourishes: the chilly framing of iconic fascist buildings such as the Esposizione Universale Roma in Rome and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris; the expressionist angles when Clerici visits his dotty mother. And\, best of all\, the ingenious sequence in a Parisian café in which Clerici’s reluctance to participate in a dance leaves him surrounded by a tightening spiral of dancers shot from above\, making him appear to us exactly what he is: a conformist alone in any crowd. Rarely has cinema been so daring or freighted.” (Oct. 2010) \nThere will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards led by Duke Professor Gary Hawkins\, who wrote the screenplay for the 2013 film Joe (which\, by the way\, we strongly recommend to you; it’s free on Prime and on YouTube). \nAs always\, the film is open to the public and free\, and the popcorn is free too. If you would like to attend\, please sign up before 3 pm Friday\, 1/23\, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our website: \nScroll down to the line that says\, “PLEASE REGISTER HERE\,” and click on the link. \n(Please notice: You are not required to register in advance\, and you will not be turned away if you don’t\, but the Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed\, and they need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense. Please sign up if you are thinking of coming.) \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Upcoming Classic Film: Chaplin's "City Lights"
DESCRIPTION:The HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY’s holiday movie this year will be Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights:” Sunday\, December 7th\, at 2pm. Please notice the location: this month only\, the film will be shown at the ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY on West Margaret Lane in Hillsborough.\nChaplin made the film in 1931\, resisting the advent of sound just after talkies began to appear. In the essay that accompanied the Criterion restoration of the film\, Gary Giddins called it “an indelible masterwork of cinema\,” and noted that now\, nearly a century after its release\, it seems safe to call it a masterwork of Western civilization as well:\n“City Lights … represents both a beginning\, in that it has been endlessly imitated\, and an end\, in that it has never been superseded. … Chaplin’s new art was a form of storytelling combining burlesque comedy and dreadful pathos\, each tuned to a pitch so high that the audience is jolted from one physical response to another: laughter and tears\, the two faces of Comedy and–not Tragedy but rather–the melodramatic concession of Pathos …. Familiar territory today\, but … no one had brought it off before\, and Chaplin–the orphaned music hall clown who became\, through movies\, the most popular comedian the world has ever known–defied his partners warnings that his ambition would cost him his audience.”\nIt didn’t cost him his audience\, of course. Chaplin\, “the orphaned music hall clown\,” became\, through movies\, “the most popular comedian the world has ever known.”\nFrancesca Talenti will introduce the film and lead the discussion afterwards. Francesca is a Professor Emerita of Media Production at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a filmmaker and animator\, a director and a media designer who has exhibited her work from The Folger and the Guthrie (design\, Hamlet\, Pericles)\, to Sundance\, to PBS National\, by way of Mumbai\, Göteborg\, Casablanca\, and many others. She has won 18 awards and has received numerous grants. She’s led the discussion for us on Vertigo (2019); Top Hat (2022); The Searchers (2023) ; West Side Story (2024); and a Christmas program of Chaplin films back in our second year of operation\, 2019.\nAs always\, the film is open to the public and free\, and the popcorn is free too. If you would like to attend\, please sign up by going to our website\,\nwww.hillsboroughclassicfilms.com\,\nscrolling down to the line “PLEASE REGISTER HERE\,” and clicking on the link.\nAnd\, once again\, please don’t confuse the location: this month only the film will be shown in the Orange County Public Library\, 137 West Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. (A note for those who are helped by the presence of subtitles: Since this is taking place in the Library Meeting Room subtitles would be difficult or impossible to see; luckily this is\, by and large\, a silent film.) \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Upcoming Classic Film: Fritz Lang's "M"
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 2\, at 2 in the afternoon\, the Hillsborough Classic Film Society will present Fritz Lang’s “M” at the Passmore Center in Hillsborough. A proto-noir from the early days of talkies\, it starred Peter Lorre as a serial killer pursued not only by the police but also by the criminals of the region\, angry because his crimes had brought the police down on them. It was Lorre’s first and most memorable leading role and Lang’s first venture into sound. It is generally recognized as one of the most important and influential films of all time\, but it isn’t just of historical interest: today it gets top grades from critics and audiences alike. On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes it has a 100% positive rating among critics (with an average score of 9.3) and from 25\,000 audience members it has a rating of 95%. On IMDb’s voter ranking of the 250 top-rated films\, it comes in at # 107. In the most recent Sight and Sound critic’s poll of the greatest movies of all time\, it was listed at #36.\nIf you are interested in classic cinema\, you should not miss this one. One of the things for which “M” is best known is its innovative use of sound technology. The film was released in Germany in 1931\, when the technology was relatively new. “The Jazz Singer” had been released in the United States in 1927; the first German sound film came out in 1929. Lang’s handling of sound (and of silence)\, including voiceover and leitmotif\, revolutionized the use of the new technology\, and that’s one of the reasons we are delighted to have Jeffrey Stern to lead the discussion of the film. Jeffrey has served as a sound editor for over 100 American films\, including “Do the Right Thing\,” “Goodfellas\,” “Silence of the Lambs\,” “The Original Kings of Comedy\,” “Chicago\,” “The School of Rock\,” “The Hoax\,” “Amelia\,” and “Addiction Incorporated\,” as well as the TV series “Boardwalk Empire.” He has been nominated for five Emmy awards and was dialogue editor on the team that won the Emmy in 2013 for Outstanding Sound Editing for the series “Boardwalk Empire.” This promises to be an enlightening discussion.\nAs always\, the movie is free and so is the popcorn. If you would like to attend\, please register in advance. The Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed\, but they need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense\, so please sign up if you are thinking of coming. Either call the Passmore Center front desk—919 245-2015—before 3pm on Friday\, October 31\, or register on our website any time before the film—. While you’re there\, you might consider joining our mailing list. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Upcoming Classic Film: Wooden Crosses (French\, 1932)
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY is delighted to present Raymond Bernard’s 1932 film\, Wooden Crosses\, at 2pm Sunday\, February 2\, at the Passmore Center. The Center is at 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. The film is free (and so is the popcorn). \nWooden Crosses is a distinguished film not often seen in this country\, considered one of the two or three best films about the First World War. David Blakeslee\, writing in 2010\, said about it\, “No one who has ever seen this technical and emotional powerhouse has been able to forget it.” Professor Max Owre will be leading the discussion. Max is Executive Director\, Carolina Public Humanities at UNC. He is a fierce advocate for the public humanities and a great friend of the Classical Film Society; he has been helping us out since the very first season with Battle of Algiers in 2019\, Grand Illusion in 2020; Lacombe\, Lucien in 2022\, and Au Revoir Les Enfants in 2024. If you’d like more information about the film\, visit our website\, hillsboroughclassicfilms dot com; there is a great deal of information there\, including links to reviews and to trailers; we recommend especially the 1970s interview with the director\, Raymond Bernard. \n Again\, Wooden Crosses will be shown at the Passmore Center on February 2 at 2 p.m. If you would like to attend\, please sign up before 3 pm Friday\, January 31\, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our website. SUMMARY:Upcoming Classic Film: Mon Oncle Antoine
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present the French-Canadian film Mon Oncle Antoine at 2pm Sunday\, December 15\, at the Passmore Center\, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. It’s in Canadian French\, with English subtitles. There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards. As always\, the film and the popcorn are free. \nIf you would like to attend\, please sign up before 3 pm\, December 13th\, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our website:\n	hillsboroughclassicfilms.com.\nThe Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed\, but they need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense. Please sign up if you are thinking of coming. \nMon Oncle Antoine is set in the asbestos region of Quebec. The action takes place during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in a period just before the Asbestos Strike of 1949 and nearly a decade before the beginning of the Quiet Revolution that turned Quebec from a conservative\, church-dominated province\, with a deadly asbestos mining industry largely in the hands of English-speaking outsiders\, to a secular social democracy tending toward separatism.\nAlthough it is not well known in this country\, Mon Oncle Antoine is listed as the greatest Canadian film of all times in a number of polls\, including three of the Sight and Sound polls\, and has won a number of Canadian and international awards. Roger Ebert included it on his 2008 list of the greatest movies. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Salvatore Giuliano
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY\, in conjunction with THE PASSMORE CENTER\, will show the 1962 Francesco Rosi film SALVATORE GIULIANO at 2pm on Sunday\, May 5 at the Passmore Center. The Center is at 103 Meadowlands Drive\, in Hillsborough. Registration in advance is not required\, but it is much appreciated. You can register before 4pm Friday\, May 3\, by calling 919 245-2015\, or until noon on Friday at our website\,\nhillsboroughclassicfilms.com\nThe film traces the history and politics behind the murder of the notorious Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano in 1950. In his 2014 review at the website Time Out\, Trevor Johnston said “[It is] among the most striking black-and-white movies ever made . . . . Place it alongside ‘The Battle of Algiers’ and ‘Z’ in the pantheon of political greats.” Rotten Tomatoes\, the review aggregator\, shows 100% positive reviews among film critics. Martin Scorsese lists it as one of his twelve all-time favorites. If looking for reviews or trailers of the film online\, don’t confuse it with other Italian films with the same title\, or with the dreadful American film about the same subject\, called The Sicilian; be sure it’s the 1962 film by Francesco Rosi. We encourage you to check out the reviews on our website\, including one by the distinguished French critic Michel Ciment.\nThe speaker will be UNC Professor Henry Veggian\, who teaches American literature as well as film studies. As his website points out\, Henry “was raised in and around the editorial offices of Il Progresso Italo-Americano\, the historic Italian language newspaper of New York City\,” and there is unlikely to be anyone in the area better equipped to lead the discussion for this film. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Top Hat
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present Top Hat\, starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire\, with music by Irving Berlin\, at 2pm on Sunday\, February 26. As usual\, our host will be the Passmore Center\, 103 Meadowland Drive in Hillsborough\, next to the Sportsplex. Top Hat is one of the best\, perhaps the very best\, of the many dance movies that entertained Americans from the thirties through the fifties\, and Ginger Rogers was the best of the several dance partners Fred Astaire had. As a line from a comic strip had it\, “Sure he was great\, but don’t forget\, Ginger Rogers did everything he did\, backwards and in high heels.” Our speaker will be Francesca Talenti\, herself a director and designer who has exhibited her work at The Folger in D.C. and The Guthrie in Minneapolis\, at Sundance and the PBS National. The film is free (as is the popcorn)\, but please let us know you’re coming by calling the desk at the Passmore\, 919 245-2015. Check out our schedule at www.hillsboroughclassicfilms.com\, and sign up for our mailing list while you’re at it. Our March film will be The Conversation\, starring Gene Hackman\, directed by Francis Coppola. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Free Classic Film: Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria
DESCRIPTION:HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY. The Film Society will present the 1957 Fellini classic Nights of Cabiria at 2pm on Sunday\, January 22\, at the Passmore Center in Hillsborough. The film is free to the public (and the popcorn is free\, too). Our speaker will be Gary Hawkins. Gary is a screenwriter and director\, and also teaches at Duke. Among his work is the film The Rough South of Larry Brown\, which won both an Emmy and PBS’s Gold Award. \nFederico Fellini came up through the ranks of Italian neo-realism; this film marks his move away from that tradition. “Nights of Cabiria is transitional; it points toward the visual freedom of his later films while still remaining attentive to the real world of postwar Rome.” (Ebert) \nCabiria brought Fellini his second Oscar (of four); he won his first the year before for La Strada. His wife\, Giulietta Masina\, won the Best Actress Award at Cannes for her role. The screenplay was by Pier Paolo Pasolini and others\, the music by Nino Rota; it was produced by Dino De Laurentiis (yes\, for the younger folks\, that’s Giada’s grandfather). \nIt’s a good idea to call in advance to register for the film: 919 245-2015. For more information about the film\, check our website\, www.hillsboroughclassicfilms.com. \n\n\n	Related
