DESCRIPTION:4th COSMIC RAYS FILM FESTIVAL\nMARCH 31 – APRIL 2\, 2022\nCHAPEL HILL\, NC\nwww.cosmicraysfilmfest.com \nThe 4th COSMIC RAYS FILM FESTIVAL will beam into Chapel Hill\, North Carolina from\nThursday\, March 31st to Saturday\, April 2nd\, 2022 to present 4 programs of screenings and\nlive audiovisual performances that explore the artistic possibilities of film and video.\nCo-directed by filmmakers Sabine Gruffat and Bill Brown\, Cosmic Rays is an annual\nshowcase of short films by some of today’s most exciting filmmakers and artists who break the\nnorms of traditional forms of filmmaking. \nCosmic Rays is excited to bring cinema art from around the world to the Triangle\, as well as to\ncelebrate experimental filmmakers with North Carolina connections including Laura\nAsherman\, George Jenne\, Anna Kipervaser\, Georg Koszulinski\, Lisa McCarty\, Stella Rosen\,\nShannon Silva\, Charlotte Taylor\, Charles Watson\, and John Winn. \nIn addition to over 40 short films and live audiovisual performances\, Cosmic Rays is excited to\nannounce COSMIC RAYS DIGITAL\, a new programming initiative made possible by a Media\nArts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nThe inaugural edition of COSMIC RAYS DIGITAL\, titled EVERYWARE\, is a curated exhibition of\nVirtual Reality\, Augmented Reality\, and interactive digital artworks that are now on display at\nPeel Gallery in Carrboro\, NC through April 2nd\, 2022. \nEveryone is warmly invited to attend: \nA FREE AFTER PARTY following the last screening on Friday\, April 1st\, 2022 at Fatwood\nStudio in Chapel Hill featuring a performance by Durham’s own Judge Schreber and Her\nCosmic Band (Emma Dunlap-Grube\, Libby Rodenbough\, Evan Morgan\, Justin Morris\, and\nOliver Child-Lanning )\, and \nA FREE CLOSING RECEPTION from 6PM – 9PM on Saturday\, April 2nd\, 2022 at Peel Gallery\nin Carrboro featuring AV performances by Durham’s Governance (Rebecca Uliasz + Quran\nKarriem) and Portland-based digital magician Brent Coughenour. \nA FESTIVAL PASS is available for a suggested donation of $5 – $20 at\nwww.cosmicraysfilmfest.com. Cosmic Rays is an annual celebration of non-commercial short films\nthat extend the idea of film as art. ALL EVENTS (including all screenings and performances) are FREE AND OPEN to the public.  \nScreenings will be held at the historic Varsity Theater (123 E. Franklin Street)\, and performances will be held at Nightlight (405 ½ W. Rosemary Street). Co-directed by filmmakers Sabine Gruffat and Bill Brown (professors at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill)\, Cosmic Rays is an annual showcase of short films by some of today’s most exciting filmmakers and artists who break the norms of traditional forms of filmmaking. In addition to over 40 short films\, Cosmic Rays is excited to welcome RACHAEL RAKES\, Programmer at Large for Film at Lincoln Center – New York\, who will present “Forms Are Facts\,” a program of avant-garde films by Ja’Tovia Gary\, Steffani Jemison\, Regina Jose Galindo\, and Oneyka Igwe. \nBack by popular demand\, Cosmic Rays will also present a special program of live-cinema performance. This year\, we are pleased to welcome New York-based signal jammers MSHR (Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy); Vancouver-based 16mm film wrangler ALEX MACKENZIE; San Francisco-based algorithm alchemist BRENT COUGHENOUR; and Los Angeles-based media artist MELISSA FERRARI who will present a Magic Lantern performance entitled Relict: A Phantasmagoria. \nHighlights from this year’s program also include legendary filmmaker NAOMI UMAN who will be in attendance to introduce a program of her films\, as well as a collection of short films by experimental filmmakers with North Carolina connections including Jonathan Furnell\, Anna Kipervaser\, E.B. Landesberg\, Evan Morgan\, Lydia Moyer\, Talena Sanders\, and Francesca Talenti.  \nALL SCREENINGS AND EVENTS ARE FREE\, and everyone is warmly invited to a live-cinema performance and festival party at the Nightlight (405 1/2 W.
