SUMMARY:Music on the Porch: Peter Lamb & The Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Our fall concert series continues with Triangle favorites Peter Lamb and the Wolves. An old-school jazz band with a contemporary twist\, this group of talented musicians insists on having fun while they play. “If you watch videos of old big bands\, people danced\,” says Lamb. “It wasn’t just about the musicians–it was about the scene. I think that’s taught more in North Carolina than it is in New York.” \nLamb leads the group on tenor saxophone\, aided by Paul Rogers on trumpet\, Stephen Coffman on drums\, and two musicians doing double duty — troubadour Mark Wells on vocals and piano\, and Peter Kimosh handling upright bass as well as bass saxophone. The band holds forth at Raleigh’s hip Humble Pie on first and third Wednesdays. Take a listen on iTunes\, YouTube\, or their website. Then come out and hear them in person on September 20th! \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and parking is free after 5:00 pm in the Park Place parking lot. The Center is also located along free Chapel Hill Transit bus routes A\, CL\, D\, F\, NU\, and U. Bring a picnic blanket and stay for a while! \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Music on the Porch: Marimjazzia
DESCRIPTION:We close out our fall concert series on October 4th with the Latin Jazz ensemble\, Marimjazzia. \nThis ensemble was formed by Dr. Juan Álamo\, Associate Professor of Music at UNC\, in 2014 as an experimental music project. Being born and raised in Cidra\, Puerto Rico\, Dr. Álamo cultivates Marimjazzia’s vibrant sound through combining Afro-Caribbean rhythms\, particularly those from Puerto Rico\, with the melodic elements of jazz. Marimjazzia’s sound also draws upon on well-known vibraphonists such as Cal Tjader\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Dave Samuels\, and Milt Jackson. \nTo create their vibrant sound\, Dr. Álamo will be joined by fellow UNC Music Professor Steven Anderson on piano\, Pete Kimosh on bass\, Beverly Botsford playing percussion\, and Brevan Hampden on drums. \nSo prepare to dance the night away or just bring a blanket and some snacks. However you want to enjoy your evening\, this performance will certainly be a showcase of the Latin South. If you want a taste of what to expect\, you can listen to Marimjazzia on YouTube. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and parking is free after 5:00 pm in the Park Place parking lot. The Center is also located along free Chapel Hill Transit bus routes A\, CL\, D\, F\, NU\, and U. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Unique As We Are Alike
DESCRIPTION:This fall the Center for the Study of the American South at UNC Chapel Hill will feature the work of two Lumbee artists\, community-based visual artist Ashley Minner of Baltimore’s Lumbee community\, and artist Alisha Locklear Monroe from the home of the Lumbee people\, Robeson County\, North Carolina. \n“Unique As We Are Alike” is a multidimensional exploration of contemporary Lumbee identity that focuses on the experiences of Lumbees defining themselves and their commonalities despite years of being defined by others. This process\, through symbolism and portraiture\, creates a feeling of connectedness\, compassion\, and empathy\, which showcases the uniqueness of Lumbee identity while underscoring certain commonalities of the human condition. \nJoin us for the opening reception of this exhibit on Friday\, September 14\, at 5:30 pm. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Light snacks and drinks will be served. Both artists will be present. The evening will showcase another dimension of Lumbee excellence as well\, as we celebrate the publication of The Lumbee Indians: An American Struggle\, by our director\, Dr. Malinda Maynor Lowery\, who will be reading excerpts from her new book. \nThis exhibit will remain on display through December 12\, 2018. \nParking is free after 5:00 pm in the Park Place parking lot\, approximately two blocks from the Center. \n\n\n	Related
