Tickets available starting at $0. \nJoin us for The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring award-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens\, who begins her three-year artist residency with Carolina Performing Arts in spring 2022 as part of the Southern Futures initiative at CPA. \nIn this livestreamed series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist video interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nAward-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens uses her art to excavate the past and reveal bold truths about our present. SUMMARY:The Spark with Tift Merritt: Wynton Marsalis and Carlos Henriquez
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event closes at 12 PM EDT on November 19\, 2020. \nJoin us for the third episode of The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring Wynton Marsalis and Carlos Henriquez. In this livestreamed series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist video interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nOn November 19\, Tift will sit down with Wynton Marsalis\, internationally acclaimed musician\, composer\, and managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and Carlos Henriquez\, bassist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) and lecturer at the Northwestern University School of Music. \nMarsalis and the JLCO are no strangers to Chapel Hill. In the 06/07 season—CPA’s second season ever—they began a long tradition of performing on our stage. In this interview\, Merritt will take us “backstage” with Marsalis and Henriquez for a candid conversation about their work\, their lives\, and turning points in their work as artists\, with Jazz at Lincoln Center and beyond. Marsalis’s transformational work at Jazz at Lincoln Center began in 1987\, when he co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center\, which grew into  the acclaimed institution that today serves as an international destination for jazz and education. Henriquez’s history with JLCO is nearly as long: during his time as a student in the LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts’ Concert Jazz Ensemble\, they won first place in the 1996 Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. Just two years later\, Henriquez joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Based on the series Merritt produced for the acclaimed Marfa\, Texas Public Radio\, The Spark peels back the polished performance to reveal the elbow grease\, risk\, fire\, and courage behind the art—and artists—we think we know. SUMMARY:The Eve Project: Martha Graham Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:“The EVE Project celebrates female power.”\n–New York Times \nMartha Graham Dance Company returns to Carolina Performing Arts with stunning new works from The EVE Project\, created in honor of the hundredth anniversary of the 19th Amendment and featuring the work of women choreographers and composers. Alongside classic repertory highlighting Graham heroines and anti-heroines\, The EVE Project honors the progress of women in the last 100 years and provides an entrée into today’s most pressing conversations about gender and power. \n“The EVE Project is intended to connect audiences—in the ephemeral and visceral way dance does—to both historical and contemporary ideas of the feminine\,” said Janet Eilber\, Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company. “It provides a lens through which to consider Graham’s transformative views of women in concert with the immediate and personal creations of today’s visionary dance makers.” \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Rosas danst Rosas by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Rosas
DESCRIPTION:In this riveting performance by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker\, repetition plays the lead role. A seminal postmodern work\, Rosas danst Rosas is unequivocally feminine—four women dancers engage in a dialogue of fierce movements that are countered by small everyday gestures. The exhaustion and perseverance that come with it create an emotional tension that contrasts sharply with the rigorous structure of this choreography by an internationally renowned dancemaker. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Tierra Whack
DESCRIPTION:“Tierra Whack is the Philly surrealist taking rap into another dimension.”\n—VICE \nTierra Whack is leading a generation of young artists remaking the music industry. Called a “true hip-hop original” (Pitchfork)\, the Grammy-nominated rapper/singer/songwriter’s music slips between genres and moods\, creating a surreal experience that captures the bright spectrum of human emotion with nary a dull moment. \nSince she burst onto the scene with Whack World\, she has continued to make waves. Of her 2019 Coachella performance\, Brendan Klinkenberg of Rolling Stone wrote\, “Already a charismatic performer\, Whack’s performance this weekend showed what she plans on doing with the attention she’s earned: push boundaries even further. Clad in neon green head to toe\, she was a commanding presence on stage\, and the set design (think melting monsters) and backdrop visuals (think melting Tierra Whack) made the case that this was a new\, real-life star in our midst.” \n\n\n	Related
