SUMMARY:Drawing in the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ackland Art Museum for our popular Drawing in the Galleries program this month during Studio Saturday! Amanda Hughes leads participants in a creative exploration of a particular object in the Ackland’s collection. \nParticipants all draw from one object using their own gallery-safe materials (paper/notebooks and dry media like crayons and pencils)\, then discuss what they’ve noticed through the process of drawing. \nThis is a free public program. No registration required; all skill levels are welcome. \nCheck out https://ackland.org/visit/ for visitor information\, including parking details\, gallery maps\, and accessibility resources. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Ackland Tour: A Closer Look at “Ancestral Frequencies”
DESCRIPTION:Join Ackland Art Museum educators for a lively half-hour look at a small handful of artworks. These engaging conversational tours offer a closer look at and new perspectives on works on view at the Museum. Today’s tour looks at “Ancestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026.” \nThis is a free\, walk-in event – no RSVP required. \nAbout the Exhibition: \n“Ancestral Frequencies” explores heritage and identity as mutable and shaped through fragments of memory\, migration\, ritual\, and imagination. This exhibition features the work of the graduating artists in the Class of 2026 earning a Master of Fine Arts in studio art: Rojano Mohammadzadeh\, CJ Murphy\, Michelle Lisa Polissaint\, Iris Moyan Wang\, and Wendy Yamilett. This cohort represents a wide breadth of cultural heritage and artistic media. In their art\, mythologies\, spiritual practices\, and historical narratives appear as living systems that shift as they move across time\, geography\, and cultural context. \nAncestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026 is curated by Annah Lee\, cultural center manager for the Town of Holly Springs. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Maryanna and Will Johnson. \nImage: Iris Moyan Wang\, Chinese\, born 2000\, For You\, 2025\, acrylic on raw canvas\, 32 x 24 inches. SUMMARY:Stuff Your Fears with Artist Jen Clay
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the themes in her installation “Soft Night\, Watching\,” artist Jen Clay is hosting a drop-in art-activity to create stuffie versions of your fears and anxieties. The Ackland Art Museum will provide supplies to decorate your own stuffie. Clay will be available to answer questions about how she uses soft textures and also encourages touch in her artworks to soothe dreads and worries about the world. \nParticipation is free and at your pace\, but RSVPs are encouraged to guarantee a stuffie is available for your use. Please register at the Ackland’s event webpage (https://events.ackland.org/event/stuff-your-fears-with-artist-jen-clay/) for your free individual ticket. Otherwise\, they will be available first come\, first served. \nAbout the Exhibition (https://ackland.org/exhibition/jen-clay-soft-night-watching/): \n“Soft Night\, Watching\,” is an interactive quilted installation that invites viewers to experience an evening forest scene filled with uncanny forms and figures. Artist Jen Clay utilizes the tactile properties of her hand-dyed cotton\, satin\, velvet\, and polyester minky fabric to create art that welcomes physical handling. \nClay uses the strangeness of an archetypal forest as a metaphor for the sense of unfamiliarity and disorientation that can accompany mental health experiences such as hallucinations. The artist derives her inspiration from the literary genres of horror and science fiction\, especially the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century field of “weird fiction.” Soft Night\, Watching especially reacts to tales like the 1927 short story “The Colour out of Space” by H.P. Lovecraft and the 1907 novella The Willows by Algernon Blackwood. Both tales feature landscapes that are visited by inexplicable phenomena that animate the local flora and terrify visitors. \nImage Credit: Self-Portrait of Jen Clay\, 2024 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Ackland F.A.M. Day: Growing Up
DESCRIPTION:Activities for the whole family inspired by the Ackland’s current exhibition “Bill Bamberger: Boys Will Be Men.” \nF.A.M. (Families at the Museum) Day is a free\, walk-in program for all ages; drop in all afternoon! \nVisit https://events.ackland.org/events/ to learn more about the Ackland’s upcoming public programming. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nBill Bamberger: Boys Will Be Men presents introspective portraits of current and former male high school students from the Durham School of the Arts (DSA) by distinguished Durham-based photographer and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumnus Bill Bamberger (American\, born 1956). Bamberger’s images explore the diversity of American masculinity exhibited by contemporary youth facing adulthood. They are accompanied by the students’ audio reflections on the expectations and experiences of coming of age. \nInspired by his own experiences navigating adolescence to manhood\, Bamberger began the Boys Will Be Men series in 1984 while a teacher at Deerfield Academy\, an all-male private boarding school in Deerfield\, Massachusetts. He returned to the series in 2000 as an artist-in-residence at the public Flint Central High School in inner-city Flint\, Michigan. \nIn 2022\, the Ackland commissioned Bamberger to bring the project to an area high school\, ultimately partnering with DSA\, a local public magnet school for arts education. There\, Bamberger worked with students on campus for two academic years to photograph and interview interested participants. Bill Bamberger: Boys Will Be Men presents a selection of forty-two photographs drawn from the images created with over 250 student participants. The photographs are presented alongside an audio program drawn from a series of long-form interviews with selected students. \nThis exhibition is made possible by support from the late Barbara C. Newborg\, M.D. and Karen and Chuck Lovelace. Additional support has been provided by Mimi Hock and Amir and Anna Barzin. \nImage credit: Bill Bamberger\, American\, born 1956\, Jhesser\, 2024\, pigment inkjet print \n\n\n	Related
