DESCRIPTION:Art\, Health\, Equity Series\n“Access\, Activism\, and Aesthetic Revision: Crip Methods for Art History”\n125 Chapman Hall \nThis talk brings together the core arguments of The Agency of Access: Contemporary Disability Art and Institutional Critique (2024)\, Hospital Aesthetics: Disability\, Medicine\, Activism (2025)\, and Rehabilitating the Asylum: Mental Health Justice and Contemporary Art (2027) to demonstrate that disability is not peripheral to canonical art; instead\, it is one of its most generative methodological engines to arise with the canon of 20th century art history. Across these three books\, Amanda Cachia develops what she calls a critical-aesthetic approach to access\, care\, and confinement\, tracing how hospitals\, asylums\, and contemporary art institutions function as overlapping architectures of power\, creativity\, and resistance. Moving between art history\, disability studies\, medical humanities\, institutional critique\, and the activist strategies of contemporary disability artists\, Cachia shows how access operates as an artistic medium and how care becomes an aesthetic category. By centering disability as both method and material\, she proposes an art history that is structurally transformed by the politics and poetics of access\, and how pertinent historical artworks and movements can be reconfigured based on a crip revision.  \nAmanda Cachia is Professor of Practice in Museum Studies in the School of Art at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University and Affiliate Faculty in the Disability Studies B.A. Her research interests include disability art history\, theory and activism\, crip curatorial practices and access aesthetics\, museums\, institutional critique\, and social justice\, and critical disability approaches to translation\, movement\, medicine\, and health. Cachia is the author of three books\, Rehabilitating the Asylum: Mental Health Justice and Contemporary Art\, (forthcoming 2027)\, Hospital Aesthetics: Disability\, Medicine\, Activism (2025)\, and The Agency of Access: Contemporary Disability Art and Institutional Critique (2024)\, the latter of which was shortlisted for the College Art Association’s 2026 Charles Rufus Morey Book Award. She is also editor of Curating Access: Disability Art Activism and Creative Accommodation (2022)\, which includes over 40 international contributors. She is currently working on her fourth book project\, Disability Art: A Political History. Since 2010\, Cachia has organized 20 art exhibitions devoted to the work of disabled artists. She is currently developing the major touring exhibition Vital Signs: From Patient to Power with Mid-America Arts Alliance and ExhibitsUSA\, which will be hosted by numerous galleries across the United States from 2027-2032. Cachia is also a curatorial and disability advisor for a major exhibition being developed about art and disability from the 19th century to the present at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2028. \nA weeknight or daytime permit is now required after 5:00 pm on weekdays. DESCRIPTION:The book “50 Years of Ms. Magazine” came out in 2023. For this curated stage reading\, five readers (all poets\, playwrights\, and directors) will read select pieces from selected articles in the book\, stretching back to 1972.  \nMs. Magazine is a part of history. It highlights feminism and it continues to explore feminism as the world changes. Ms. Magazine has writing that has shaped our current world and is a part of the history of democracy and gender equity. It has documented struggles for body autonomy\, equality\, and justice and it continues to do so. \nThough this reading was planned before the death of Gloria Steinem\, it is timely because of her recent death at 92 years old. She was the co-founder of Ms. Magazine. She was also a journalist and reported for years on issues of gender equality\, especially reporting on them in Ms. Magazine. She did a lot to ensure that feminism was for all people and that backlash against it was not dividing us. She understood the concept of intersectionality and recognized that some women face multiple forms of oppression\, not only because of gender. \nMs. Magazine still continues today after 50+ years. It centers women\, the women’s movement\, the continued fight for equality\, and it holds up feminism as a necessary part of justice. It reports on the ways elections\, government\, and laws affect the freedom that people of all genders have. It reports on the gaps and on the successes. It uplifts body autonomy and choice\, leaving voice to individuals. It also unites people in community in the ongoing fight for democracy\, social justice\, and equity. \nThis reading is a recognition of voice and journalism around a social movement for change and equality. DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents PATTERN RECOGNITION\, mixed metal jewelry by Nell Chandler\, acrylic collage landscapes by Adrienne Knowles and hand-made functional pottery by Evelyn Ward. In the gallery from August 25th through September 20th.  An opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on August 28th from 6-9pm. During the art walk Cameron Mincey will play country and rock music on the front patio. The show includes an artist talk by Nell Chandler\, Adrienne Knowles and Evelyn Ward in the gallery on Saturday\, September 12th at 4pm. \nThe commission for a ring inspired a new line of work for jeweler Nell Chandler. The customer wanted a band with brass foliage all around it. Though Chandler often depicts foliage on her jewelry\, usually she paints the image on the metal and sets it in clear resin. The intricacy of setting brass on brass was a new experience. “I was a little surprised at how meditative sawing\, filing and sanding brass foliage can be\, and by the unexpected patinas I achieved on the band.”\nChandler’s niece\, Emily\, is a stained glass artist who loves wearing her aunt’s creations. Emily fashioned little glass “gems” for Chandler. “I could feel my eyes sparkling when I opened the box and started looking through them and pairing them up. I spent the whole weekend making bezels and sketching designs for them in my sketchbook.”  \nAlthough painter and printmaker Adrienne Knowles doesn’t approach paintings with patterns in mind\, they often appear in the choices she makes – the warm colors\, the tendency to place something recognizable in an abstract\, favorite techniques\, tools\, and materials. Most of her paintings are acrylic\, mixed media\, and collage\, though she also works in oil and cold wax medium. Some of the paintings in this show are monotypes\, one-of-a-kind layered acrylic prints on paper made using a gel printing plate. Says Knowles “I love for viewers to feel a little surprise when they observe a painting from a distance\, then move closer to find patterns and randomness\, the energy or stillness\, the familiar or just the vague reminder of something they can’t quite remember.” \nPotter Evelyn Ward tells her students “when you can’t think of how to decorate a pot\, go with stripes. I say it a little jokingly\, but I don’t think it’s bad advice.” Ward has always been drawn to pots with patterns. Their predictable repetition and rhythm give a sense of order.\n“I’ve been employing a lot of patterns because they work so well with monoprinting\, which I use on all of my work.” Monoprinting is a transfer method in which colored slip is painted onto cut pieces of paper\, which are applied to a leather-hard piece of pottery after the slip has dried a little. When the paper is pulled off\, the slip stays transferred to the surface of the pot. This printing technique gives the pieces a distinctive look and texture\, and lends itself very well to patterns. \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artists featuring painting\, sculpture\, photography\, glass arts\, jewelry\, turned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard\, and mixed media. 121 N. DESCRIPTION:Welcome Back to Campus: Reception for “Against Nature” \nThe Ackland Art Museum welcomes back faculty\, students\, and staff to campus with a celebration for its newest installation in the ART& space\, Phaan Howng: Against Nature.  \nIn Against Nature\, artist Phaan Howng positions an ornate botanical composition above wainscotting that suggests the architecture of a late nineteenth-century study or parlor. The paneling’s mint green tint evokes the green interior paints used in that period\, achieved through harmful additions of arsenic. Above the wainscotting\, painted vinyl banners depict a jungle of barely contained foliage with spikes and fronds of neon reds\, electric oranges\, cerulean blues\, and bruised purples. \nDuring the evening\, we will be celebrating with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Phaan will be present during the evening to mingle with attendees. SUMMARY:Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Jes Fan
DESCRIPTION:100 Hamilton Hall \nJes Fan’s interdisciplinary practice explores the intersection of biology and identity\, incorporating living matter\, as well as invisible substances like melanin and hormones\, that shape how we experience the world into their sculptures. Through this process\, Fan looks at how these highly politicized materials form our understanding of the social constructs of race and gender\, and the absurd pursuit of delimiting these as quantifiable amounts of material. Originally trained in glassmaking\, Fan combines hand-blown cellular glass forms with casts made from sections of human bodies\, in aqua resin and bearing uncanny flesh-like tones. Removed from the context of the figure\, these forms take on abstract qualities\, repeated and distorted across architectural armatures\, suggesting an experience of the body increasingly intertwined with and mediated by technology \nJes Fan lives and works in Brooklyn and Hong Kong. Fan’s recent solo exhibition Unbounded was at Yale University Art Gallery\, New Haven\, in 2026. In 2024\, Andrew Kreps Gallery presented Sites of Wounding: Interchapter\, Fan’s first solo exhibition in New York. The same year\, Fan was included in the 2024 Whitney Biennial and Greater Art Toronto. In 2023\, Sites of Wounding: Chapter 2 was on view at the M+ Museum in Hong Kong for the 2023 Sigg Prize exhibition. In 2022\, Fan participated in The Milk of Dreams\, the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Cecilia Alemani\, Venice. Fan’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions: including Scientia Sexualis\, at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\, 2025; Symbionts: Contemporary Artists and the Biosphere\, MIT List Visual Arts Center\, 2022; Breaking Water\, Contemporary Arts Center\, Cincinnati\, 2022; Soft Water Hard Stone\, The Fifth New Museum Triennial\, New Museum\, New York\, 2021; The Stomach and the Port\, Liverpool Biennale\, United Kingdom\, 2021; NIRIN\, Biennale of Sydney\, Australia\, 2020; The Socrates Annual 2019\, Socrates Sculpture Park\, Queens\, 2019. Fan was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2022. \nAn endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students.  The Hanes Visiting Artist series greatly enriches both our academic programs and our outreach to the wider community.  All lectures are free and open to the public. \nThis event is eligible for CLE credit. \nA weeknight or daytime permit is now required after 5:00 pm on weekdays. No permit is required from 5:00 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday. A $1.00 one-night pass is available in selected lots. DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents INTERTWINED\, botanical oil paintings by Chris Graebner\, watermedia collage paintings by Nancy Smith and figurative needle-felted sculpture by Lynn Wartski. Intertwined will be in the gallery from July 28th through August 23rd. \nAn opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on July 31st from 6-9pm. During the art walk Reishi Riot will play live music on the front patio. \nThe show includes an artist talk by Chris Graebner\, Nancy Smith and Lynn Wartski in the gallery on Saturday\, August 15th at 4pm. \nFor painter Chris Graebner memories and paintings are completely intertwined. “When I see something that strikes me\, I immediately reflect on how I could go about painting it.” While most of her work is in oils\, she has worked in many other mediums and often mixes them. “Last February I saw the golden evening sky through the bare winter trees. The juxtaposition of the yellow sky and the gray trees was so striking that I immediately decided that I had to paint it.” That painting\, One Golden Evening is a mixture of mediums. The support is a clayboard panel\, allowing the painted surface to be scratched through in several areas\, the background is acrylic and graphite and the trees are oil paint. Not only are Graebner’s life and art intertwined\, so\, increasingly are the mediums in her artwork. \n“There is a space where pure imagination intertwines with complete awareness of what is. I seek to dwell there\,” says artist Nancy Smith. How does the evening light different from that at midday? How does the sky interact with trees? Color choices and painting tools help her find answers to these questions. “I make the choice to experiment with options of paint\, brushes\, brayers\, or water spray and allow a conversation to develop between myself and the surface I’m working on.”\nAs the work in this show demonstrates\, setting and atmosphere have a large influence on Smith’s questions. She uses different mediums\, watercolor and acrylic\, on a variety of surfaces to describe her answers. \nThe very process of creating Lynn Wartski’s sculptures references the title Intertwined. In addition to the mechanics of needle felting\, many of these sculptures combine\, or intertwine\, elements of different animals and plants into one new creation. Inspiration from nature\, fantasy and mythology are all intertwined. “As is often true of my work\,” says Wartski\, “several of these new sculptures also combine elements or embellishments that I have fashioned from other materials and techniques taking them beyond needle felted figures into the realm of mixed media.” An example of these interconnections is a sculpture titled Primordial\, which features a tortoise figure with botanical elements from the forest floor sprouting from its back. The piece weaves together animal and botanical characteristics and draws on creation stories which tell of a turtle rising up with the dry land on its back. \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artists featuring painting\, sculpture\, photography\, glass arts\, jewelry\, turned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard\, and mixed media. 121 N. This special program is included in admission. \nAbout the Artist\nMadeleine Popkin is an interdisciplinary artist from Chapel Hill\, North Carolina\, working with painting and sound-based installation. Her practice engages bioacoustic research through the translation of scientific data and field recordings into immersive experiences. She collaborates with bioacoustic researchers to develop works that make human impact on the environment viscerally perceptible. She received a BFA from Cornell University’s College of Architecture\, Art\, and Planning. \nArtist Statement\nMy work uses painting and sound to translate environmental research into embodied experience. I collaborate with underwater bioacoustic researchers and coastal labs\, working directly with recordings produced through site-specific field research. These recordings are not neutral documents; they carry the structure of marine life: communication for navigation\, reproduction\, socialization\, and survival. I examine how human and nonhuman systems overlap and persist over time by working with recordings of coastal environments and anthropogenic noise pollution. Embracing Tranquility will be in the gallery from June 23rd through July 26th. \nAn opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on June 26th from 6-9pm. During the art walk the Jackson Street Band will play live music on the front patio. \nThe show will include an artist talk by Mark Kinsella and Jason Smith in the gallery on Saturday\, July 11th at 4pm. \nGlass artist Mark Kinsella explores the paradox of glass: a material born of intense heat and violent transformation that\, once cooled\, possesses a profound\, silent clarity. Using kiln-forming techniques\, Kinsella creates calm suspended moments in time that he calls his “meditation on stillness.”\nSays Kinsella\, “Each piece is a study in balance. The fluidity of the glass contrasts with its solid form; the warmth of the kiln gives way to the cool touch of the finished surface. Through layering\, texture\, and color\, I attempt to translate the intangible feeling of tranquility into a tangible object. DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is pleased to announce Embracing Tranquility\, kiln-formed and fused glass by Mark Kinsella\, Native American-inspired totems and wall hangings by Jude Lobe and abstract metal sculpture by Jason Smith. Embracing Tranquility will be in the gallery from June 23rd through July 26th. \nAn opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on June 26th from 6-9pm. During the art walk the Jackson Street Band will play live music on the front patio. \nThe show will include an artist talk by Mark Kinsella and Jason Smith in the gallery on Saturday\, July 11th at 4pm. \nGlass artist Mark Kinsella explores the paradox of glass: a material born of intense heat and violent transformation that\, once cooled\, possesses a profound\, silent clarity. Using kiln-forming techniques\, Kinsella creates calm suspended moments in time that he calls his “meditation on stillness.”\nSays Kinsella\, “Each piece is a study in balance. The fluidity of the glass contrasts with its solid form; the warmth of the kiln gives way to the cool touch of the finished surface. Through layering\, texture\, and color\, I attempt to translate the intangible feeling of tranquility into a tangible object. My goal is to create a space for the viewer to stop\, look\, and simply be.” \nIn his work\, sculptor Jason Smith invites viewers to pause\, breathe\, and reconnect with a sense of inner calm. “Metal has been my primary medium for 30 years and this exhibition is my personal meditation on finding peace amid the noise of daily life\,” says Smith. “Each piece is an invitation to embrace stillness without emptiness\, strength without tension\, and serenity in simplicity.”\nIn this show Smith collaborates with Kinsella to create metal sculptures with fused-glass elements\, exploring the quiet strength found in balance\, flow\, and stillness\, and allowing translucent color and captured light to soften the rigidity of the steel.
