SUMMARY:Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Sheida Soleimani
DESCRIPTION:100 Hamilton Hall \nSheida Soleimani is an Iranian-American artist who lives in Providence. The daughter of political refugees who were persecuted by the Iranian government in the early 1980s\, Soleimani makes work that melds sculpture\, collage and photography and highlights her own critical perspective on historical and contemporary socio-political occurrences in Iran. She focuses on media trends and the dissemination of societal occurrences in the news\, adapting images from popular press and social media leaks to exist within alternate scenarios. Her work has been recognized internationally in both exhibitions and publications such as Artforum\, The New York Times\, The Huffington Post\, Interview\, and VICE Magazine. \nSoleimani is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Brandeis University and a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow. \nAn endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students. The Hanes Visiting Artist series greatly enriches both our academic programs and our outreach to the wider community. All lectures are free and open to the public. \nA weeknight or daytime permit is now required after 5:00 pm on weekdays. No permit is required from 5:00 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday. A $1.00 one-night pass is available in selected lots. More information can be found at UNC’s Weeknight Parking website. \nContact: Martín Wannam\, mwanna@unc.edu \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:There and Back
DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents There and Back\, playfully illustrative pottery by Bernadette Januska\, vibrant landscape paintings by Marcy Lansman and abstracted botanical paintings by Ellie Snow. In the gallery from September 22nd through October 25th. The opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on September 25th from 6-9pm. During the art walk\, Duo d’Antan (David Digiuseppe and Rob Sharer)\, will play live music on the front patio. The show will include an artist talk by Bernadette Januska\, Marcy Lansman and Ellie Snow in the gallery on Saturday\, October 17th at 2pm. \nPotter Bernadette Januska fell in love with illustration long before she discovered clay\, and it remains an essential part of her work today. Each vessel becomes a surface for illustration. Her work draws inspiration from her Filipino heritage as well as pop culture. Each piece is handbuilt and carved with flowers\, animals and playful messages. “By combining precolonial Filipino motifs with contemporary imagery” says Januska\, “I explore the space between my cultural heritage and my experience growing up across America\, bridging the gap between the two. My ultimate goal is to create functional pieces that can be used and cherished every day—vessels that invite a deeper connection to the simple acts of eating\, drinking\, and sharing.” \nWhat excites painter Marcy Lansman most is the use of color in her landscapes.\nLandsman describes her technique this way\, “I begin by covering the canvas with random blobs of bright color. Then I use a palette knife to create an ‘overpainting’ on top of the color blobs\, letting specks of the underpainting peak through. This year\, I’ve been experimenting with a wider variety of colors in the overpainting. I’ve found that the wider the variety of colors\, the more vibrant the painting.” Asked if she paints plein air\, Lansman says she visits the site and takes many\, many photos\, then uses the photos as inspiration for the painting. \n“At this stage of life\,” says painter Ellie Snow “I spend a lot of time on the rural roads between Hillsborough and Saxapahaw\, ferrying my kids to and from school. My paintings often originate from scenes I pass.” With the title There and Back\, she decided to focus on painting these scenes she passes four times a day. “I am in awe of how they change daily or weekly depending on weather and season. I sometimes took videos from the window of my car and used stills from the videos as my reference photos.” Other times\, she would pull over and take photos\, or even park and walk\, to look at what is often passed by so quickly. “In the end\, I was surprised at how different these paintings are from one another. The season\, weather\, light\, and mood had a big impact on how each one turned out. It’s that novelty that keeps me inspired and excited to get home and paint. \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artists featuring painting\, sculpture\, photography\, glass arts\, jewelry\, turned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard\, and mixed media. 121 N. Churton Street\, Hillsborough NC. Hours: Monday through Saturday 10-6\, Sunday 12-4. For more information about the show visit http://www.HillsboroughGallery.com \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Switch Theatre Company Presents August Wilson's Radio Golf
DESCRIPTION:Harmond Wilks is on the verge of becoming Pittsburgh’s first Black mayor\, and his ambitious redevelopment project for the Hill District – including a new golf course – promises economic growth and a new future. But his plans may be derailed by a single rundown house owned by long time resident “Old Joe” Barlow\, who may have a deeper connection to Harmond’s past. Along with his upwardly-mobile business partner Roosevelt\, his public relations mastermind wife Mame\, and street-smart handyman Sterling\, Harmond is forced to confront the cost of progress\, the meaning of legacy\, and the value of community. The riveting final chapter of August Wilson’s 10-play American Century Cycle\, Radio Golf is a compelling and timely drama that challenges us to consider what we are willing to sacrifice for the sake of the future. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Bettie Allison Rand Lectures in Art History: Alexander Marr\, University of Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Pictorial Intelligence in Renaissance Art: Holbein’s Wit\nUniversity Room\, Hyde Hall \nThe Renaissance witnessed intense debate about the nature and location of human intelligence. When it came to artists\, this was focused on natural endowments versus trained skill\, the relationship between the mind and the hand\, and—especially among humanists—whether pictorial art was capable of intelligent authorship as opposed to mere replication of the visible world. Taking Hans Holbein the Younger as a case study\, this lecture will explore how the mindful hand of a supremely gifted painter could demonstrate the inherent ingenuity and playful wit of an inventive–rather than merely mimetic–artistic intelligence. \nAlexander Marr is University Professor of Renaissance and Early Modern Art. He specializes in European art 1400-1800\, especially its intellectual and literary aspects in their social contexts. His most recent publication is Holbein’s Wit: Pictorial Ingenuity in Renaissance Art. \nBefore coming to Cambridge\, he taught at the University of Southern California and the University of St Andrews. From 2014 to 2019\, he was Director of the project Genius before Romanticism: Ingenuity in Early Modern Art & Science\, funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. His awards include a Paul Mellon Centre Senior Fellowship\, the Robert H. Smith Residency at the V&A\, and a Philip Leverhulme Prize. He was the founding Director of Cambridge Visual Culture (CVC). In 2024\, he delivered the Pharos Lectures at the University of Oxford. \nThrough a generous gift to the UNC Arts and Sciences Foundation\, William G. Rand established this lecture series in memory of his late wife\, Bettie Allison Rand. This funding enables the Department of Art and Art History to invite one or more eminent art historians to UNC-CH every other year for residencies of various lengths. While they are in Chapel Hill\, these scholars present a series of lectures and interact with undergraduate and graduate art history and studio art students. \nA weeknight or daytime permit is now required after 5:00 pm on weekdays. No permit is required from 5:00 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday. A $1.00 one-night pass is available in selected lots. More information can be found at UNC’s Weeknight Parking website. \nDepartmental website: https://art.unc.edu \nContact: Christoph Brachmann\, cbrachma@email.unc.edu \nImage: Hans Holbein the Younger (German\, 1497-1543)\, Studies of the Hands of Erasmus of Rotterdam\, c. 1523. SUMMARY:Backroads and Byways\, Landscapes by Jeff McEntire
DESCRIPTION:Backroads and Byways is a curated collection of Jeff McEntire’s work over the last several years\, mostly landscapes\, in a variety of mediums. \nSince Jeff was very young\, he has traveled and explored this country and others\, frequently drawn to areas off the beaten path. SUMMARY:John and June Allcott Gallery: taylor barnes\, Weight of Light
DESCRIPTION:Reception and gallery talk: October 29\, 2026\, 5:00 pm \nWeight of Light explores how powerful emotions can be expressed through simplicity. Using bold contrasts between light and dark\, the artist creates striking images that convey feeling through form\, space\, and gesture rather than detailed storytelling. The exhibition invites viewers to slow down and experience mood\, tension\, and vulnerability in a direct and deeply human way. \nWeight of Light brings together seven works created by artist taylor barnes during her year-long residency at West Orchid in Pine Lake\, Georgia. The work marks a period of experimentation and personal reflection. Drawing from her background in fibers and ceramics\, barnes approaches the canvas as a site of material exploration. Through processes of staining\, layering\, and transforming solids into liquids and back again\, she creates environments that make space for chance\, absence\, and emergence. The seven works resist Western linear narratives\, instead functioning as maps of origin within an ongoing movement from uncertainty towards revelation. Moving between darkness and light\, the works consider perception\, ambiguity\, and the experience of reclaiming. Existing somewhere between painting and object\, these works function as thresholds. As open-ended structures\, Weight of Light positions ascension as a practice of self-possession and power. \ntaylor barnes is a ceramicist and fiber artist exploring spirituality\, oral history\, and power through material and form. Heavily influenced by bell hooks’ object/subject theories\, she works with clay\, fabric\, string\, and charcoal to translate emotion and experience into tangible presence. Black being her only color choice and philosophy\, she creates work that appears restrained yet carries deep labor\, lineage\, ritual\, and quiet intensity. barnes received her MFA in Fibers from the University of North Texas. She lives and works between Georgia and Austin\, Texas. \nAdmission: Free\nGallery Hours: Monday-Friday\, 8 am-5 pm \nA weeknight or daytime permit is now required after 5:00 pm on weekdays. No permit is required from 5:00 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday. A $1.00 one-night pass is available in selected lots.
