SUMMARY:LUNCH AND LEARN: Using Public Domain Works in Your Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Iconic works from the 1920’s have entered the US public domain. The first iteration of the character Betty Boop\, the book The Maltese Falcon and classic Gershwin tunes are now eligible for use by artists. These works with expired copyrights can be freely used\, modified\, and sold commercially without permission or royalties. Artists can remix\, reframe\, or digitize these works for new creations\, using these early 20th century staples to inform their own work. \nJoin us for a free Lunch and Learn with Jennifer Jenkins\, from the Duke Law Center for the Study of the Public Domain\, to learn how you can legally use these works in your own artwork and creative projects. Discussion topics will include Copyright Expiration\, Best Practices\, and what types of copyrights will apply to your own work when using IP in the public domain. \nJennifer Jenkins is Clinical Professor of Law at Duke Law School. She writes the Center’s annual Public Domain Day website and has been quoted on intellectual property and the public domain in outlets such as The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, LA Times\, The Atlantic\, Rolling Stone\, Variety\, Billboard\, the Associated Press\, Planet Money\, CBS News\, the BBC\, and NPR’s Morning Edition\, Weekend Edition\, and Marketplace. She is the author of Music Copyright\, Creativity\, and Culture (Oxford University Press\, 2025) and co-author (with James Boyle) of Intellectual Property: Cases and Materials (6th ed\, 2024)\, Theft! A History of Music (CSPD 2017)\, and Bound By Law? (CSPD 2006). \nThis is an online event. \nRegistration is free for this event. You will receive a link to the event with your registration. \nThe event will be recorded and participants will have access to the recording for 30 days after the event. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Ackland Tour: A Closer Look at “Ancestral Frequencies”
DESCRIPTION:Join Ackland Art Museum educators for a lively half-hour look at a small handful of artworks. These engaging conversational tours offer a closer look at and new perspectives on works on view at the Museum. Today’s tour looks at “Ancestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026.” \nThis is a free\, walk-in event – no RSVP required. \nAbout the Exhibition: \n“Ancestral Frequencies” explores heritage and identity as mutable and shaped through fragments of memory\, migration\, ritual\, and imagination. This exhibition features the work of the graduating artists in the Class of 2026 earning a Master of Fine Arts in studio art: Rojano Mohammadzadeh\, CJ Murphy\, Michelle Lisa Polissaint\, Iris Moyan Wang\, and Wendy Yamilett. This cohort represents a wide breadth of cultural heritage and artistic media. In their art\, mythologies\, spiritual practices\, and historical narratives appear as living systems that shift as they move across time\, geography\, and cultural context. \nAncestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026 is curated by Annah Lee\, cultural center manager for the Town of Holly Springs. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Maryanna and Will Johnson. \nImage: Iris Moyan Wang\, Chinese\, born 2000\, For You\, 2025\, acrylic on raw canvas\, 32 x 24 inches. SUMMARY:Full of Whimsy & Rage Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Full Of Whimsy and Rage\, showing May 1 – June 10\, 2026 at PAF Gallery in Siler City\, North Carolina will feature the abstract works of Ash Lorusso and Paget Marion Blythe. Their bold\, bright acrylic and mixed media paintings emphasize both the power and the resilience of art making during this collectively tumultuous time. In a culture that rewards productivity\, and emotional numbing\, choosing to slow down and attune creatively becomes an act of rebellion. Through color\, gesture\, and layered marks\, their paintings are a refusal to disappear. This show insists that creativity is not a luxury\, but a vital tool for transformation and rebellion; one that allows rage to bloom into connection and strength. \n“The work of the artist is to turn her rage into flowers.” – Audre Lorde \nFull of Whimsy & Rage is funded in part by a grant received from the United Arts Council of Wake County and the opening reception will coincide with Siler City’s downtown third Friday music series on May 15. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Shakespeare in the Parks: “AS YOU LIKE IT”
DESCRIPTION:All the world’s a stage! Don’t miss Switch Theatre’s 4th annual\, free-to-the-public Shakespeare In the Parks production of “As You Like It.” Shakespeare’s madcap story of love\, mistaken identity\, and finding oneself presented in 5 communities around the Triangle. Filled with witty banter\, unforgettable characters\, and some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful poetry\, “As You Like It” is a celebration of nature\, love\, and the power of finding yourself in a changing world. Set in fictionalized North Carolina woods and infused with local music\, this abridged version is the perfect way to experience the magic of Shakespeare under the open sky. It’s love at first sight for spirited Rosalind and frustrated wrestler-turned-poet Orlando\, but when the Duke banishes Rosalind from court\, Orlando must brave the vast and mysterious Forest of Arden to bring her home. But Rosalind\, disguised as a boy\, is enjoying her adventures too much to go home just yet – especially when she might just find her long-lost father. Can Orlando’s truly awful poetry lead her back to love? Will Rosalind’s father reclaim his rightful dukedom? General seating is free. Reserved VIP seating is available to those who want to support free Shakespeare in the Triangle. Reservations are recommended. \n\n\n	Related
