SUMMARY:MUSE
DESCRIPTION:Sterling silver and gemstone jewelry by Arianna Bara\, nature and figurative watercolor paintings by Ryann Carey\, artistic handcrafted fine furniture by Pete Rodrigues. \nMuse will be in the gallery May 26th through June 21st with an opening reception during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on May 29th from 6-9pm. During the art walk Steve Fishman & The Pied Vipers will play stringy\, swingy blues and original music on the front patio. \nThe show will include an artist talk by Bara\, Carey and Rodrigues in the gallery on Saturday\, June 20th at 4pm. \nJeweler Arianna Bara’s muse has always been nature: pattern\, texture\, shape\, color\, tone and shadow. Her new work incorporates stones from her travels to Tucson\, where yearly gem shows attract sellers and buyers from around the world. Some of Bara’s favorite pieces in the show include Morrisonite jasper\, a rare and highly sought after jasper with strong patterns and color; dendritic limestone\, which is characterized by delicate trickling lines often resembling plant fossils; and subtle but striking Australian boulder opal. Much of Bara’s recent work includes an ancient Korean gilding technique called Keum-boo which she has also used for some pieces in this show.\nInitially painter Ryann Carey felt the title “Muse” would cause her to focus her work in a single direction. “I admire artists who dedicate themselves in this way\,” said Carey “because it offers the opportunity to develop not only technical skill but also an intimacy with an idea or subject. Yet whether from a lack of discipline or scattered mind\, the moment I try to settle on a singular muse\, I feel an immediate sense of confinement. It is as if choosing one thing requires me to turn away from everything else. That feeling of being boxed in makes me resist the very structure I desired to attain.”\nStill\, what she creates is a cohesive body of work in a less obvious way\, showing what strikes her in the visual environment surrounding her. Says Carey\, “My work is an attempt to honor and share these pauses. That moment of awareness when the world feels briefly heightened and clear.”\nFor woodworker Pete Rodrigues the definition of Muse is someone or something that provides creative inspiration. “As I continued to think about creative inspiration\, I realized that having some type of curve within my work always inspires me\,” he said. “So\, I decided to have a curved form within every piece. My mind immediately started to design\, and I’m excited to display wall hanging pieces and furniture that have this curved form within their design.” \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artists featuring painting\, sculpture\, photography\, glass arts\, jewelry\, turned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard\, and mixed media. 121 N. Churton Street\, Hillsborough NC. Hours: Monday through Saturday 10-6\, Sunday 12-4. For more information about the show visit www.HillsboroughGallery.com \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:LUNCH AND LEARN: Using Public Domain Works in Your Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Iconic works from the 1920’s have entered the US public domain. The first iteration of the character Betty Boop\, the book The Maltese Falcon and classic Gershwin tunes are now eligible for use by artists. These works with expired copyrights can be freely used\, modified\, and sold commercially without permission or royalties. Artists can remix\, reframe\, or digitize these works for new creations\, using these early 20th century staples to inform their own work. \nJoin us for a free Lunch and Learn with Jennifer Jenkins\, from the Duke Law Center for the Study of the Public Domain\, to learn how you can legally use these works in your own artwork and creative projects. Discussion topics will include Copyright Expiration\, Best Practices\, and what types of copyrights will apply to your own work when using IP in the public domain. \nJennifer Jenkins is Clinical Professor of Law at Duke Law School. She writes the Center’s annual Public Domain Day website and has been quoted on intellectual property and the public domain in outlets such as The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, LA Times\, The Atlantic\, Rolling Stone\, Variety\, Billboard\, the Associated Press\, Planet Money\, CBS News\, the BBC\, and NPR’s Morning Edition\, Weekend Edition\, and Marketplace. She is the author of Music Copyright\, Creativity\, and Culture (Oxford University Press\, 2025) and co-author (with James Boyle) of Intellectual Property: Cases and Materials (6th ed\, 2024)\, Theft! A History of Music (CSPD 2017)\, and Bound By Law? (CSPD 2006). \nThis is an online event. \nRegistration is free for this event. You will receive a link to the event with your registration. \nThe event will be recorded and participants will have access to the recording for 30 days after the event. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Ackland Tour: A Closer Look at “Ancestral Frequencies”
DESCRIPTION:Join Ackland Art Museum educators for a lively half-hour look at a small handful of artworks. These engaging conversational tours offer a closer look at and new perspectives on works on view at the Museum. Today’s tour looks at “Ancestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026.” \nThis is a free\, walk-in event – no RSVP required. \nAbout the Exhibition: \n“Ancestral Frequencies” explores heritage and identity as mutable and shaped through fragments of memory\, migration\, ritual\, and imagination. This exhibition features the work of the graduating artists in the Class of 2026 earning a Master of Fine Arts in studio art: Rojano Mohammadzadeh\, CJ Murphy\, Michelle Lisa Polissaint\, Iris Moyan Wang\, and Wendy Yamilett. This cohort represents a wide breadth of cultural heritage and artistic media. In their art\, mythologies\, spiritual practices\, and historical narratives appear as living systems that shift as they move across time\, geography\, and cultural context. \nAncestral Frequencies: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2026 is curated by Annah Lee\, cultural center manager for the Town of Holly Springs. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Maryanna and Will Johnson. \nImage: Iris Moyan Wang\, Chinese\, born 2000\, For You\, 2025\, acrylic on raw canvas\, 32 x 24 inches.
